South Street Seaport Museum
Where New York Begins
The South Street Seaport Museum documents the rise of New York as a port city and its role in the development of the economy and business of the United States through social and architectural landscapes through over 28,000 works of art and historical artifacts, and over 80,000 archival materials. These extensive holdings are composed of smaller groupings of objects that come together to trace the history of New York City’s Harbor and Port, from the East River piers and the waterfront areas of Manhattan, to the city’s other boroughs and the shorelines of New Jersey, Long Island, and Lower Hudson Valley. With its collections, the Museum also documents and interprets international trade routes, global cultures, and seafaring, including all related aspects of life, art, and work.
