January 18–19 | 5pm | 12 Fulton Street | Free
Explore the world of maritime history and theatre with the Seaport Museum and Robert A. Richter, Treasurer of The Eugene O’Neill Society, as we discuss the profound impact maritime communities had on the life and work of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Eugene O’Neill (1888–1953).
In this engaging discussion, discover how O’Neill’s experiences with seafarers and maritime life shaped his plays, leaving a lasting mark on American theatre. Gain insight into the themes and stories that made O’Neill one of the most celebrated playwrights of his time.
This free event, held in the Seaport Museum’s historic Schermerhorn Row introduction galleries, pairs perfectly with performances of In the Zone: A Maritime Play by Eugene O’Neill aboard the 1885 tall ship Wavertree from January 17 to 19. However, this conversation will be equally enriching as a standalone experience for theater enthusiasts and history buffs alike!Advance registration is encouraged. Walkups will be accommodated as possible. Wine and soft drinks will be available free during the discussion. Access to the introduction galleries in Schermerhorn Row are at street level and are wheelchair accessible.
About the Speaker
Robert Richter is the Director of Arts Programming at Connecticut College and a long-time student of Eugene O’Neill’s work. Richter is the author of Eugene O’Neill And “Dat Ole Davil Sea”: Maritime Influences in the Life and Works of Eugene O’Neill.
Through his work, Richter looks at the maritime history of New London, Connecticut, where O’Neill spent Summers, the details of O’Neill’s experience in sailing and steamships, and his Provincetown, MA experiences before tracing elements of these connections in the plays.
