Explore the Historic Seaport District
Most printers in early 19th century New York were located where the action was: near the city’s main port of entry at South Street. Walk virtually with us to discover where passenger and shipping services printed their tickets, and learn about the typography on these historic buildings.
Bowne & Co.
Established in 1775, Bowne & Co. is New York’s oldest operating business under the same name. Using seven historic presses from the Museum’s working collection, our resident printers continue the age-old tradition of job (or small batch) printing, creating individual designs using custom plates or historic fonts.
